Curt Schilling and 38 Studios Set to Unveil Project

Curt Schilling took baseball seriously during his 11 years as a professional pitcher, and he is approaching his foray into game development with just as much focus. He formed his company, 38 Studios (named after his jersey number), in 2007 and immediately set out to “put together a team like the 1927 Yankees”. And he did just that, bringing on genre luminaries Todd McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore as “Artistic Visionaries”.

Three years later, 38 Studios is preparing to reveal their first game at the San Diego Comic-Con this week: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Schilling isn’t new to MMOs. The pitcher has often confessed to playing Everquest, Everquest II, Ultima Online, and World of Warcraft over the years. “Next to baseball,” Schilling once said, “[MMO gaming] been the one thing that has been consistent in the last 30 years of my life.”

38 Studios will be holding a panel at SDCC this week to debut their new game. The studio has promised to show a one minute cinematic trailer at the panel, directed by McFarlane himself. Schilling is hopeful about Kingdoms of Amalur’s chances in the increasingly busy MMO market: “If we focus on what we are trying to do and deliver on our vision, people are going to want to play our game.”

Those lucky folks at the San Diego Comic-Con can see all the fuss for themselves on Thursday, July 22 at 1:15pm in Room 6A.
