A lot of information came out about Guild Wars 2 this past week at Gamescom, which was touted as the place where ArenaNet would finally release detailed information on its PvP system. And while they did release a lot of info, it turns out it was all the information that I really didn’t care about.
What ArenaNet presented was a battle arena PvP system that is completely independent of the main persistence world. You don’t use your GW2 character, instead you select from a pre-made character that is already at the max level and you select where your skill points go. Once you exit, you go back to your PvE character. I mean you could literally rip out the PvP system shown at Gamescom and make a completely separate game out of it without effecting the current game.
Keen, at keenandgraev.com, seems to have the same worries I do. Where is the World vs World vs World combat system? Where is guild vs guild combat? I sure as hell hope those are not being cut or down-graded. No persistent world PvP, no playie-playie.
What ArenaNet presented at Gamescom in regards to Guild Wars 2 PvP system is an outstanding addition to the game. I just hope it’s not the main PvP system. Hopefully we’ll get to see the real PvP system at PAX Prime next weekend.
hey hello they said it a competitive pvp. it not about lvl or gears that why they max out ur lv just like gw1. it more about how you play and how your team work. i dont know why u disappoint.
Hey dude, chill! WvWvW is still in, ANet are just not ready to show it yet! And a heads up; ANet have confirmed that the demos at PAX will be the same as at Gamescom. WvWvW will be showed later.
Also, you *do* use your PvE character in competitive PvP, it is just temp-bumped up to max level and full skill/gear unlock (you can actually save PvP templates).
Regina confirmed that they still have WvWvW in place, however they were just showing structured competitive PvP, which Arenanet hope to become an e-sport. I hope this explains everything.
Hell, the name of the game is Guild WARS, not Guild SPORTS. The steril, over-fair pvp they described sounds more like something that you’d find from a hockey game than a fantasy mmo. When I first heard the game would have open world pvp, I excecpted it to be something like what they have in EVE Online: WARS which involve thousands of players over many weeks, in many differend battles and operations. Something where every lost and won battle actually means more than abstract points towards some useless title.
hello,
there are 2 pvp modes in GW2. What has been showed on gamescom is the “structured pvp” mode, where all characters are set to max level and have access to all skills/traits and have also access to standardized gear to keep it balanced and fair. structured pvp includes a few different game modes, such as the showed conquest mode and a few more unknow ones.
World vs wordl pvp is the other GW2 pvp mode. There will be 4 giant maps, it is located in the mists. There ppl will join with their pve characters and all pve gear (no standardized gear here), and also with different levels. there will fight 3 servers against eachother in massive multiplayer battles for a week long battles. There ppl can hold keeps and fortresses.
structured pvp in GW2 is more e-sports like then you know it from other games. They set it up more like an FPS. Sure it is devided from the pve-part of the game, because in GW2, there are no enemy factions (all races have to work together), and also it is hardly balanced and equalized.
The ppl in the demo got premade builds because it is way easier for them.
You seem to be not well informed. Try reading up on a game some time before making false statements and annoy people. Thanks.
@Randolf
1) ANet has NEVER said that there would be open-world PvP in GW2. There is WvWvW though, which is even better imo (HUGE persistant area, but no ganking of people just minding hteir own business in PvE).
2) WvWvW is persistant (over a couple of weeks at least, until the match ends and servers are rematched based on ranking) and feature all those things you ask about.
3) Only stuctured “arena” PvP has the character bumped to max stats, in WvWvW you enter with your normal character and gear.
finally
4) The name Guild Wars eludes to a specific event that according to game lore transpired some time before the first game. Balanced competitive PvP has always been a cornerstone of the GW franchise.
one other thing about WvW. they put an article few days before gamescom about the pvp mode will be competitive one on gamescom, and they explain what kind of competitive mode will be on. they explain before about competitive is not about gears,lv, or skill. i dont know why u complain about these;it just make the pvp more competitive. i know u stuck on WoW system; like a lv 40 kill a lv 10 in pvp or someone has better gears than u r. there are more pvp mode coming like WvW.
To me, keenandgraev.com is not a good source to support ur argument. why? because look at the top of his page, it a TOR. as you know TOR and guild wars 2 fans are fighting.
u seem very misinformed, and jsut want to talk crap about gw2. heck u even miss spell “Disappointment”, these explain you are not taking thing more seriously.
They actually have used the words “open world pvp” in one of their panels. Don’t confuse their meaning though.
Structured PVP is going to receive more scrutiny than the other styles. I think they are right to focus on this first, the rest will fall into place easier once they get this right.
Journalism at it’s best. No research and lets post our nonsensical judgments.
This article is a disappointment.
The article was not to say there is no persistent world PvP combat in GW2, just to show my disappointment that ArenaNet choose not to show any of it at Gamescom and instead only talked about their Battle Arena combat mode.
Like I said, the PvP they showed at Gamescom is a great addition to the game, but not the PvP aspect that I’m interested in, hence it was a disappointment.
Darn… cant even believe this is an official post on the site…
Yeah the author is taking some things way out of context and making wild assumptions. To prevent the uninformed from going nuts over this I’ll let you know that ANet has already state they will be running the EXACT SAME DEMO at PAX.
Of course they didn’t show WvWvW that takes place over a week (I heard they changed it to 2 weeks but I’m not sure) and it has hundreds of players, how do they show this in a small demo?
As for the Arena PvP, it isn’t done with pre made characters, you take your characters to the PvP area and they scale up to level 80 with good armor and skills so everybody is on an even playing ground and it relies on skill not gear and of course it’s not in the same areas as the PvE as that would hardly be an arena would it?
As for the GvG we can’t say if it’s in yet as they haven’t told as any thing about the guild system and we only know one of the PvP types.
Seriously, maybe think and use some common sense before complaining in the form of a so called article.
@Mike, they put an article few days before gamescom. they describe wat kind of competitive pvp mode will be on, and how it work. so you dont have to wait to see wat kind of pvp will be on, they told u few days ahead. when gamescom does come, they did wat they said they will do.
“No persistent world PvP, no playie-playie.”
I would expect this kind of drivel to come from a message board not a MMO news site. What a joke site.
“Like I said, the PvP they showed at Gamescom is a great addition to the game, but not the PvP aspect that I’m interested in, hence it was a disappointment.”
Did they sign a contract with you that they HAVE to release WvWvW PVP this week? Otherwise you have no room to be disappointed.
God forbid they talk about PVP that is most similar to GW1 first so that loyal GW1 players can learn about that first.
They cannot show the WvWvW because you need a lot of people for it. Arenanet would have to bring like 1000+ computers to a convention. I don’t think there would be enough space for WvWvW. I believe this is good because it will be like a thing that you have to experience cannot really watch. It makes me more anticipated because I don’t know what Arenanet will unveil because WvWvW sounds like the best thing since sliced bread. I am confident that Arenanet is not only hyping their game with great details that could seem exaggerated, but also making it come true and not being fictional.
you CAN use your PvE character in Structured PvP.
by the way, you look like a fool for posting this article
Wow. If this site is going to have articles posted where the authors have zero knowledge about the game they’re speaking about, or never keep up with updates released about the game I’m not going to waste my time. This was practically like reading a troll forum post from an angry child who didn’t get what he wanted.
I will make sure to spread the word to my Guild, Alliances, and entire friends list across the different mmo’s I play to never sign up on this horrible site. It will be a waste of their time and they will be terribly misinformed.
@Lensor
Well now we’re talking! I just want something that feels more like war and less like virtual combat sports. You know, there are very few such online games out there so I was and am placing high hopes on GW2.
ps. Ganking carebears gets boring after a while anyway… Fine, that’s a lie, but I quess I can live without it.
Ouch, looks like I received the full wrath of the GW2 community.
@EA/Lensor “you CAN use your PvE character in Structured PvP.”
Quote from Jon Peters PvP article:
“When a player takes a character into PvP, they are granted access to all the necessary skills, items, etc”
Its not “your” character when you’re granted access to all skills, items and gear. Sorry, it might be the same class and have the same name, but it’s not your “real” character. It’s a stock character you can build up anyway you like, which I think is a fantastic idea for the battle arena PvP.
@Mangoose
“Did they sign a contract with you that they HAVE to release WvWvW PVP this week? Otherwise you have no room to be disappointed.”
Yes, I’m fully aware of what ArenaNet said they would be presenting at Gamescom and PAX Prime. However it’s common practice for developers and publishers to release additional information or videos as a surprise to fans. So I was hoping to see some of the other PvP ArenaNet has mentioned and am still hoping they show some of it at PAX. Sorry, but I’m allowed to be disappointed.
Wow, now I know the World v. World PvP is a great addition to GW2, but it sounds to me like you never played GW1. GW1 was designed to be “a completely separate game” and in fact the PvE game was meant solely to be an introduction of sorts to PvP. However, some liked their PvE more (myself included) and never got into PvP, which is eventually why they made GW2 so that they could support the PvE side more. Their vision for competitive gaming is for everyone to be on an even keel and for skill to matter, not items or levels.
World v. World info will come in time, but for GW1 PvP veterans, this announcement means the world to them as it keeps GW2’s high-end PvP as untarnished by luck/grind as GW1’s PvP was.
tldr: This announcement really wasn’t meant for you, but for GW1 veterans. Hence why we are jumping on you. :P
i loved what they showed. The same levels for all character makes the balancing done by the devs that much better. I love fps games so dropping into a competitive game with good balance that depends on player skill is amazing. They only showed that part of pvp you idiot the games not done they aren’t gonna let you run around the open world and look for pvp.
Please stop with these articles. You obviously didn’t play GW.
There are many game types. Conquest, elimination, GvG, WvWvW. It allows something for everyone.
Just wanted to pipe in to say that this article proves how very little the author knows about Guild Wars 2. Like seriously, all the things he complains about has been addressed or is inaccurate.
“What ArenaNet presented was a battle arena PvP system that is completely independent of the main persistence world.”
Yes, competitive 5v5 tournaments are detached from the persistence of the world. This is because the game is being made into an eSport. Outside influences could affect the balance of the PvP, so it is instead being tuned so that everyone is on the same level and skill takes precedence over time played.
“You don’t use your GW2 character, instead you select from a pre-made character that is already at the max level and you select where your skill points go.”
No, you get to use your character from PvE. However, if you’re a level one player, the game will automatically boost you to level 80 so that you can be competitive in a PvP environment. Your stats will not be quite as good as a real level 80, but it certainly evens the playing field.
“Where is the World vs World vs World combat system? Where is guild vs guild combat? I sure as hell hope those are not being cut or down-graded. No persistent world PvP, no playie-playie.”
The World v World v World is not enough complete for ArenaNet to show it off. They don’t show stuff off until it’s virtually done, so this shouldn’t be taken as an issue. It is still in the game. And with regards to your other complaints, they can be answered with WvWvW. WvWvW is the persistant version of PvP in Guild Wars 2. You can again bring in your level one and bump him up to 80, but with the same consequences as in competitive play. There is however gear/skill progression in WvWvW. This is because WvWvW is intended to be a fun, open world PvPvE styled arena with thousands of players at once 24/7 for 2 weeks. This contrasts nicely with the competitive PvP which is designed to place all players on an absolute equal playing field so that SKILL is the only factor.
Guild v Guild combat isn’t gone either, but they have yet to reveal any guild related features yet. It’s just not to that ultra high quality that ArenaNet wants it to be in before they detail it to the public. Competitive PvP has a tournament styled system, which I’m sure Guilds can sign up for.
Anyway, please do some more research into the game before you go off writing articles about why you’re so disappointed; it’s really just your own ignorance.
This might be the worst article ever written about GW2. Out of context, no prior research, and no love for e-sports (which is the whole point of the max level characters).
0/10
@Mike
The problem is that your article is misleading. To me this sounds like you think the PvP is poorly done, not that it just isn’t what you were expecting. That is why people are getting defensive. I don’t think this article was really even necessary. GW fans want real news, not a vague opinion. Save your feelings for your personal blog.
I’m seeing already you’re getting a lot of comments that are telling you what you’re wrong about. I just wanted to say it’s pointless to make comments about hoping devs don’t cut things out of a game when that game doesn’t even have a release date OR a beta AND on the same day talked about those aspects of the game in a Q&A. You should probably do some research in the future.
Disappointment? You’re an idiot. Do you even play Guild Wars 1? Max lvl max gears so that the only thing that count is skill. And it’s not even the main pvp. None of us know the release date yet so maybe in a few months they’ll release the info. Please do yourself a favor, don’t post about stuff you know nothing about.
Are you really complaining that they made a showcase DEMO for structured PVP that gives you premade characters so that you can try out that PVP gametype? WTF, are you mentally retarded? Did you expect to start a level 1 character, level him to 80 and then go play WvWvW or structured pvp? They gave you premade builds because it’s a demo for those who don’t know what each skill does, they need a viable build given to them so that once they have finished waiting 5 hours in line they can get straight into the action. Please learn common sense you queer.
The system they have is awesome BTW. Just read the other comments and remove the MMO thing from your site, its laughable.
Mike, WvWvW doesn’t equalize your level, it completely takes your PvE character right into the game, Competitive PvP does do an even field to determine skill.
Learn.
To.
Read.
I think your all being a bit hard on Mike, As I see it all the article says is that they only touched on part of the PvP and gave us nothing about the other side of PvP. With all the GW2 hype building and launch getting closer I think its quite normal to hope that the WvWvW they plugged is coming along and would have been nice to see more about it …. hes disappointed that they didnt.
He didnt rag GW2, he just aired what he would like to see more information about at the next showing. Jeez guys lighten up.
@xaras Yes, thank you :)
Well Mike, you seem to be surprised that so many people are upset with you. But look at it this way.
Imagine if I wrote an article about a game you knew a lot about. You have been checking updates on it frequently, hunting down every single video, and dev posts you can find. Then you see my article and half of what I write is misrepresented or completely false.
I think you would be inclined to re correct me as well; and you probably would be annoyed at my arrogance to write about a game as if everything I knew was accurate when I didn’t keep up to date with.
lol at mike
do learn to read, before you rant.
there is good criticism and bad criticism and yours fell in the line of REALLY bad criticism.
First, your title is misleading.
Second, some of your information is lacking credibility.
Third, your ranting is based on flawed opinion, rather than knowing all the credible facts before you criticize.
AND LASTLY, I’m not part of GW2 community (yes, i dont have an account to any of gw2 community forums).
Just because you received negative feedback, does not mean they are from there.
Your article just sucks.
BTW, ALL MMOS SUCK IN GENERAL.
Yes it is true that you dont take the same pve char you use into pvp. Thats called a system thats set up for balance. a system based off skill. NOT a system that is based off of who has the best pve gear and skills. HA! Written like a true WoW fanboi.
Let me ask you a question… If you go to a both and play a demo a a first person shooter, and all they let you test is a single map, do you go home crying and ranting that the game is a let down because they only have one map thats playable.
As the devs said, you will be able to test out the competetive arena style pvp… if you have been paying any attention at all to other resources from this games development youd know that.
But hey, not everyone can be a usefull reviewer.
Now that ArenaNet stated there is no GvG and the only structured PvP mode is Conquest, I’ll accept all your apologies ;)
http://www.mmocrunch.com/2011/08/20/guild-wars-2-interview-jon-peters-only-one-structured-pvp-mode/
hmm …. have a feeling this thread will be pretty dead from here on in lol
Haha, carebears out en masse spouting the usual line of bullshit to defend a game they’ve never played.
ArenaNet dislikes GvG, despite it being the only (!) successful PvP format from the original game. Aside from that, only TA and HA are worth mentioning – the rest might not have even existed.
I’m not sure why ANet threw these modes out the window when designing PvP for their new game. Alliance Battles was one of the worst arenas in the original game – why would they make that the “focus” of PvP in GW2?
The entire thing reeks of poor decision making, and it’s going to show when their e-sport fails to go anywhere. Alliance battles were always boring, and will continue to be boring even re-branded as “conquest.”
Mike & Auron: This would seem to contradict your interpretation of what Peters said… perhaps he meant they’ve only developed conquest so far?
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/extremely-dissatisfied-with-pvp-t20413.html?p=859564#post859564
They have already stated a bloody YEAR AGO that there wouldnt be GvG.
Only Competitive PvP (Conquest is not the only type)
And WvWvW
You keep missing the pivotal point that GvG is translated in the Monthly and Yearly tournaments, even thought its not in the form you wanted. QQ
No one needs to apologize since if you ACTUALLY read ANYTHING about this game, you would know this like EVERYONE ELSE does. There’s a reason why people are pissed, it’s because you again dont know what the hell you are talking about, but lets just cover our eyes anyway.
Yea they better have some small scale deathmatch like wow arena so we can actually have something competitive. Conquest is fine for some fun but its laughable they make this the only structured pvp mode.
I hope they don’t ruin this game but looks like its gonna be another one for the mouth breathers now.
@Mike
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=859564&postcount=291
Now we all will accept YOUR appologies.
“Just to clarify: Conquest is not the only PvP game type. We have other formats that we are not ready to talk about, so for gamescom we are focusing our information releases on formats that we are ready to talk about. We’ll talk more about other PvP game types in the future.
Secondly, as I mentioned in another thread and on our social networks, the World vs. World format is still in the game. Again, for this set of information releases at gamescom/PAX, we’re focusing on stuff we’re ready to talk about in public. We’ll have more about that in the future when we’re ready to share more information about it. “
Fail WoW CLone
@Mike, where our apology?? u whining they dont put WvWvW for gamescom. as you know they TOLD u a week ahead what kind of PVP they going to bring. and now u complaining y no world pvp at gamescom. seriously? just dont troll
@WoWClone;
u just prove u dont know any crap just like Mike; GW2 is completely different than wow.
