Guild Wars 2 Interview Jon Peters – Only One Structured PvP Mode

In a new interview with GuildMag, Guild Wars 2 designer Jon Peters was asked some interesting questions about the structured PvP system and there were some juicy answers.

When asked whether there would be other structured PvP modes besides Conquest, Peter’s answered,

right now there’s only one mode, conquest

This could mean that either in the current development process there’s only one mode or it could mean there will only be one mode at the time of launch. It took it as there will be only one mode at launch time, but I could be wrong.

Peter’s also confirmed that eventually there will be an observer mode for structured PvP matches, but probably not at launch. PvP rewards will also be available to all players, not just those that play in the structured tournaments. The rewards mentioned were weapon skin unlocks and titles.

When Peter’s was asked “Why abaondon such a successfull format as gvg?”, he replied,

I’m not so sure gvg is all that successful…its a little too complex and little too hardcore

He goes on to talk about the difference between Conquest and how it’s an improvement.

So looks like Conquest mode is going to be the replacement for GvG in Guild Wars 2. Maybe I took his answer wrong, but to me it sounds like there isn’t going to be GvG outside of the Conquest PvP game mode. So can I now be disappointed?

  1. From the Guild Wars 2 forums I found this statement from Regina Buenaobra

“In case people are concerned whether World vs. World is still in the game: yes, it is. We are focusing on other aspects of PvP game types with this set of information releases, which is why Jon’s article doesn’t discuss WvW”

So altho the interview doesnt bode well, I am still holding out hope, especially if the devs actually listen to the community who are all in favour of more PvP flavours

Based on this Arenanet poster it looks like only Conquest is in development but they’re planning on adding more modes…

I honestly can’t imagine PVP without at least CTF

  3. Found another post on you tube – totalbiscuit was trying out the PvP with the leadsystems designer – at 10:50mins the guild wars representative says there will be 2 main focuses for PvP, the smaller conquest type & large scale World v World with castle seiges and the like. Full video posted here:

  4. Xaras , that’s a good video everyone should watch it.

But that rep wasn’t talking about the differences between each competitive/”Structured” PVP types, he was talking about the basic two fundamentally different forms of PVP in GW2 – the one they showed at Gamescon with only that one map is the competitive “Structured” PVP type with everyone automatically at max level and equipped with same PVP class gear so skill and teamwork determines the outcome of a match, not higher level people with uber gear…

The World vs World vs World is the “casual” type of PVP where one world/server can have way more people in the to fight other servers and that’s allowed (servers are ranked and matched with other servers of the same rank every 1-2 weeks, and part of the reason it’s 1v1v1 not 1v1 is so the losing servers can gang up on the winning if they want to). Lower levels are “side-kicked” up to higher level health/stats if way too low level but that’s it, and you can have hundreds of people in one area playing, so the PVP gameplay is completely different.

  5. I completely missed the first comment, so looks like I put up a wall of text about WvWvW for nothing…

Anyways I seriously doubt ArenaNet, having made GW1 and with their attention to detail, would somehow screwup structured PVP as to bore players to death with limited gametype options. This is Gameplay Design 101 basic stuff we’re talking about here…
